59 days… and counting…
Ripples…
How big things can cause big ripples… or they can fall and die in the water, barely breaking the surface of the Ocean of Existence… and the tiniest of things can cause immense, far-reaching ripples, that reverberate through time and space… an American president can have hardly an impact upon the history of humanity… and a few words in a book (or on a blog or spoken in a conversation) can inspire a religious or intellectual movement…
Ripples…
Through DNA… passed from generation to generation… coursing through the blood of one’s children… one’s children’s children… a spoken word, a smile, a memory… a shudder through the Tree of Life… or the tiniest, imperceptible tremble… influencing the future… speciation… preservation of thought through all eternity…
Ripples…
Of love… the children of all time… the responsibilities of the parent… fizzle to nothing… or create new islands… countries… continents… worlds…
Ripples…
Through eternity… can transform… into a new Ocean of Existence…

Nice post! I’ve recently been pondering “the butterfly effect” as I consider my own life and what lasting impact I can make within the world. (According to the definition in Wikipedia, “The phrase refers to the idea that a butterfly’s wings might create tiny changes in the atmosphere that ultimately [by causing a chain of events to occur that lead to larger and larger scale phenomena] cause a tornado to appear (or prevent a tornado from appearing).”
With that in mind, my conclusion is that the breeze I can create with the greatest potential (or the “ripple” to borrow your metaphor) is love and those values that go with it: patience, tolerance and encouragement.
It’s still hard for me to believe that this is what it boils down to … but it looks like you’ve come to a similar conclusion!

It does indeed, Brenda!
And it may seem like an over-simplification to say that “it all boils down to love,” but… well… why can’t things be that simple? It seems to me that it is the politicians, business leaders, etc (speaking very generalistically here, of course, and allowing for the inevitability of exceptions), who make things appear to be more complicated than they are - or than they need to be. It is, after all, profits and political power which thrive on complications!
Anyway, I could go on and on about the simplicity of love (and I may indeed do so, irrespective of the inherent irony in such, in a future blog entry), but I would like instead to finish by saying that, although love is not *all* you need… if you want to send those positive ripples reverberating through time and space… it’s a pretty good place to start!

I think the complex part is getting everyone on the same page. It’s tough getting the world at large to show genuine love and acceptance when we each struggle with our own little prejudices and — in the bigger picture — when half of us are busy bombing the other half. We’ve got to get more ripples started!

Of course, bombing causes pretty enormous ripples, but not of the sort we want…
